Internship Brief

We are seeking a Public Relations Interns, who are full of creative ideas and eager to contribute on a large scale. The interns will gain visibility into the inner workings and aspects of the public relations field as it pertains to municipal government, provide concrete deliverables and learn from top to bottom. When the internship is completed you will be ready to enter any fast-paced PR position.

Our public relations (PR) interns work closely with the PR manager and department. Among other duties, they assist with the planning of marketing events, write media releases and newsletters, and update social media pages. They also create media kits and client information packages.

To be a successful PR intern, the student must be a confident public speaker and have basic skills in social media marketing. Ultimately, an outstanding PR intern should be able to build relationships with the media and suppliers of marketing material, while constantly looking for ways to boost the company’s corporate image.

Public Relations Intern Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Mayor’s Office in implementing the City’s PR strategy.
  • Creating engaging content for media releases, social media platforms, and newsletters.
  • Updating and maintaining the Mayor’s social media pages.
  • Building relationships with community partners and potential partners, suppliers, and the media.
  • Aiding the Mayor’s Policy Advisor, PR manager, and Parks and Recreation, and Community Development with the scheduling and organizing of Mayor’s events.
  • Giving input on marketing initiatives and suggesting creative ways to improve the City’s public image.

 

 

  • Conducting research on marketing initiatives of other Cities.
  • Monitoring of media coverage on events and media releases that were issued and creating press clippings.
  • Updating media lists.
  • Performing administrative duties.

Public Relations Intern Requirements:

  • Enrollment in a BA or BSc degree in public relations, communication, public administration, or journalism.
  • Excellent understanding of various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Efficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic budget coordination skills to track spending on sponsorships, events, and marketing material as assigned.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and engaging with the North Lauderdale Community.
  • Good research and analytical skills.
  • The ability to prioritize internship workload and keep to strict content deadlines.
  • Willingness to attend corporate events after hours and on weekends.
  • Knowledge of copywriting and editing.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a student actively enrolled in a college or university with a G.P.A of 2.7 or higher OR a graduate student or recent graduate from a college or university with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
  • Applicants must complete all requirements established by the City of North Lauderdale Executive Interns
  • This may include, but is not limited to, a written examination, a comprehensive background investigation, and a job-related medical examination including a drug/alcohol screening test
  • Must be a non-smoker

Benefits:

Compensation:  $15.00 per hour

Duration

Semester Based Program.  Continuation is based on successful performance of duties and educational institution’s requirements.
